A votação decorre terça-feira e domingo.

Last year, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette eulogized Margaret Mary Vojtko, an 83-year-old French adjunct who died in abject poverty after teaching for more than two decades at Dusquesne University, scraping by on $25,000 a year before being unceremoniously fired without severance or retirement pay.

Long hours, endless targets, worried children: as Michael Gove shakes up our schools, we find out why teachers are quitting in droves

Steve Caplin illustration of Michael Gove and a machine making teachers

'You feel you’re being judged all the time, not trusted to get on with the job you’ve been trained to do,' says teacher Nancy Powell-Brace.

As a lot of teachers see it, they are the focus of bitter hostility from ministers and educational high-ups, and the victims of an increasingly oppressive machine. Schools are swamping their pupils and staff in data and targets, leaving no room for the kind of human values that were once at the centre of what teachers did. These aspects of education, teachers say, also distort their priorities, so filling in spreadsheets sometimes takes precedence over actually teaching kids.

History teacher, 28, east London: "If I don't take work home in the evening, I feel guilty, and if I don't work at weekends, I worry that I haven't done anything for two days. In the holidays, there's a lot of marking and planning, and revision sessions. I'm 28 and don't have any children or extra responsibilities, but I'm worried about the future: this is my career, it's what I want to do, but how will I do it with a family?"

"There's an atmosphere of oppression," Powell-Brace says.

Philadelphia closes 23 schools, builds $400 million prison

Philadelphia is going to drastic measures to close a $304 million deficit. In March, Pennsylvania’s School Reform Commission voted to close a whopping 23 schools. The move came after the House cut $961 million from the education budget. And by July 1, a total of 3,783 employees of the Philadelphia school system will be unemployed.

So how did the city find the money to invest in a new, $400 million prison complex? That's what many critics are wondering.

Contractors are currently working on the second-most-expensive prison Pennsylvania has ever built, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The Great Divide: College, the Great Unleveler

That’s before we even begin differentiating by type of college. Higher education is becoming a caste system, separate and unequal for students with different family incomes. Where students attend college affects their chances of graduating and how indebted they will become in the process.

Private nonprofits, schools like Stanford or Vassar, list the highest “sticker prices,” but the average student pays less than half of full fare. Some nonprofits provide generous need-based aid to low- and middle-income students, supplementing their federal aid. Others devote their resources instead to merit-based aid, courting students with high SAT scores, typically from higher-income backgrounds. These colleges rise in the rankings, but they also provide a disadvantage to poorer students who would benefit from more need-based aid, who struggle financially to stay enrolled and who take out more student loans to do so.
