Planeta perde 24 bilhões de toneladas de solo fértil por ano

O solo é parte fundamental para a sobrevivência do planeta. Graças a ele temos alimentos, ar, água, roupa e tudo o que precisamos.

Restaurar o solo de terras degradadas, no entanto, pode ser uma arma importante na luta contra a crise climática. Com o setor de uso da terra representando quase 25% do total de emissões globais, a restauração de terras degradadas tem o potencial de armazenar até 3 milhões de toneladas de carbono anualmente.

A importância de assegurar que a terra seja bem gerida é observada na Agenda 2030 para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, que declara que “estamos determinados a proteger o planeta da degradação, incluindo por meio do consumo e produção sustentáveis, gerindo de forma sustentável os seus recursos naturais e adotando ações urgentes sobre as mudanças climáticas, para que possa apoiar as necessidades das gerações atuais e futuras”.

In fact, 2016 marked the 11th consecutive year of decline in global freedom.

According to the Freedom in the World 2017 report, a minority of the world’s countries can be considered free – just 45%.

Of the remaining nations, 30% are considered to be partly free, with some level of democracy and press that may be corrupt or heavily under the control of the ruling party.

Perhaps most alarmingly, data gathered by the report’s authors reveals that there were setbacks in political rights, civil liberties, or both, in a number of countries rated “free” by the report, including: Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Tunisia and the US.

Dá algum trabalho mas, é possível. Por estes dias, desde que chegou o Verão e o ritmo de trabalho abrandou, vou ao mercado sempre que posso, abastecer-me de frutas e legumes. Quando não posso ir, como durante os períodos lectivos em que estou a trabalhar, vou a uma das mercearias do bairro. Levo um saco de lona para onde ponho as coisas pesadas como laranjas e maçãs. Guardo as caixinhas onde vêm as amoras, framboesas, etc. e, em vez de as deitar fora, devolvo-as às vendedoras respectivas. Trago quase nenhum plástico e o pouco que trago reutilizo. Só vou ao supermercado comprar aqueles produtos que preciso e gosto e não existem nos mercados e mercearias. Cada vez faço menos comida que necessite de usar abrasivos para limpar e, se posso, uso limão diluído em água para o fazer em vez de comprar detergentes.

A verdade é que produzo muito menos lixo daquele não bio-degradável, sobretudo no Verão. Mesmo quando vou às lojas, aos saldos, por exemplo, declino os sacos que me querem dar em cada sítio e vou atirando tudo para dentro do mesmo saco, sempre que posso.

Aliás, duas: a primeira é não comer carne mais que duas vezes por semana, no máximo e, a segunda, é abster-me de comer quaisquer produtos de origem animal (leite, iogurtes, manteiga, etc.), pelo menos, três dias por semana.

A ONU considera que adoptar uma dieta livre de produtos animais é a única maneira de sobrevivermos e não destruirmos o planeta porque em breve seremos 9 biliões, tendo em conta o crescimento da população na Índia e na China, agora que egoisticamente acabaram com a política de um filho.

Parece-me que cada um tem que fazer a sua parte e tem que começar-se já de modo que vou iniciar um processo de desabituação desses produtos. Não é que coma muita carne mas como muitos produtos de origem animal.

Envelhecida e desequilibrada, China põe fim à política de filho único

O planeta tem gente a mais e já faltam recursos e a China é um dos grandes responsáveis mas em vez de manter o controlo do crescimento da população resolveu abrir as portas ao descontrolo. Têm falta de jovens? Pois, também nós e muitos outros. Essa é a maneira de baixar o número descontrolado de pessoas que está a deixar o planeta à beira duma catástrofe: deixar que o número de mortes [idosos] seja bastante maior que o número de nascimentos. Isso piora a competitividade económica? Talvez, mas o ser humano desaparecer por excesso de gente e de malfeitorias feitas ao planeta para sustentar tanta gente é muito pior, não?

Estão desequilibrados e têm muitos rapazes e poucas raparigas? Isso não se deve à política de filho único mas a perpétuarem um sistema machista onde as mulheres só têm obstáculos e os homens portas abertas. É por isso que os pais abortam as raparigas e só querem rapazes. Há muitos anos que se vê esse problema a crescer. Corrigir políticas erradas com outras ainda piores para não mexer nas injustiças dos sistemas... Isto é de loucos. O planeta, como diz um amigo, ainda vai piorar muito, antes de melhorar.

SPIEGEL: Can the goal of a nuclear free world still be achieved today?

Gorbachev: It is the correct goal in any case. Nuclear weapons are unacceptable. The fact that they can wipe out the entirety of civilization makes them particularly inhumane. Weapons like this have never existed before in history and they cannot be allowed to exist. If we do not get rid of them, sooner or later they will be used.

SPIEGEL: What do you think of the oft-cited theory that mutually assured destruction prevents nuclear wars?

Gorbachev: There's a dangerous logic in that. Here's another question: If five or 10 countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons, then why can't 20 or 30? Today, a few dozen countries have the technical prerequisites to build nuclear weapons. The alternative is clear: Either we move toward a nuclear-free world or we have to accept that nuclear weapons will continue to spread, step by step, across the globe. And can we really imagine a world without nuclear weapons if a single country amasses so many conventional weapons that its military budget nearly tops that of all other countries combined? This country would enjoy total military supremacy if nuclear weapons were abolished.

SPIEGEL: You're talking about the US?

Gorbachev: You said it. It is an insurmountable obstacle on the road to a nuclear-free world. That's why we have to put demilitarization back on the agenda of international politics. This includes a reduction of military budgets, a moratorium on the development of new types of weapons and a prohibition on militarizing space. Otherwise, talks toward a nuclear-free world will be little more than empty words. The world would then become less safe, more unstable and unpredictable. Everyone will lose, including those now seeking to dominate the world.

SPIEGEL: Is there a risk of war between Russia and the West over the crisis in Ukraine?

Gorbachev: We have reached a crossroads in relations between America and Russia. Many are already talking about a new Cold War. Talks between both powers over important global problems have practically been put on ice. That includes the question of nuclear disarmament. Trust, the very capital we worked so hard to build, has been destroyed.

SPIEGEL: Do you believe there is a danger of nuclear war?

Gorbachev: I'm very worried. The current state of things is scary. The nuclear powers still have thousands of nuclear warheads. Nuclear weapons are still stationed in Europe. The pace of reducing stockpiles has slowed considerably. We are witnessing the beginning of a new arms race. The militarization of space is a real danger. The danger of nuclear proliferation is greater than ever before. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty has not entered into force, primarily because the Americans did not ratify it. This would have been extremely important.

Economics is full of wonderful concepts. One of my favorites is “effective demand.” Like a magic wand, it can make billions of people disappear.

Suppose a farm can produce 100 pounds of food and there are 100 very hungry people who’d like to eat it but have no money. You might think that there’s a demand for 100 pounds of food. Silly you! There’s a need for the food, of course. But this is civilization: you can’t demand something just because you need it. If food costs a dollar a pound and each person has ten cents, then there’s ten dollars of effective demand. If each person has 25 cents, there’s $25 of effective demand. In that case, any sensible farmer-capitalist would produce only 10 or 25 pounds of food. Supply has to equal demand, and demand equals need plus money.

But what about those 100 people and their needs? Well, they exist, I suppose, in some world or other, but not in the market economy. In the market economy, if you’re not a cost or a revenue source, you don’t exist. Some of those people may have once lived on the land now owned by the farmer-capitalist and have been been physically expelled. Others may have been expelled from their jobs by factory-capitalists, often at the behest of finance-capitalists. In any case, all of them have been expelled from the Promised Land of the Market and condemned to wander in the outer darkness, invisible.

According to Columbia University sociologist Saskia Sassen in her new book Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy (Harvard University Press, 286 pages, $29.95), the above is not a just-so story. There has been a shift in the logic of global capitalism. Until the 1980s, the fundamental dynamic was inclusion: bringing ever more people and resources into the economy and society, for example, by incorporating subsistence producers and self-governing communities into market relations and citizenship. For the last several decades, the logic has been one of exclusion: excluding vast numbers from their livelihoods, their land, or their homes; excluding vast areas of land and ocean from the biosphere; and excluding vast quantities of resources (above all, water) from the global commons.

A que os homens fazem às mulheres. Todos os dias. Em todo o lado. Nuns sítios piores que noutros mas, em todos os sítios do planeta. Agora há um programa na TV dinamarquesa onde o apresentador mais um convidado fazem críticas e gozam com uma mulher nua em frente deles: fazem comentários ao corpo, riem-se de características do corpo, condenam se não fez depilação disto ou daquilo, depreciam-na e reduzem as mulheres a corpos que devem agradar aos homens.... pois, na Dinamarca! Temos um planeta ainda governado pela força bruta. Outro dia perguntavam à Merkele, numa entrevista, o que é que os homens têm que ela gostsse de ter e ela respondeu, 'a voz grave e a habilidade para cortar troncos de madeira'. Já fiquei a gostar dela!

Hoje o papa Xico, a propósito do dia da mãe falou de virgens... a virgem Maria para aqui e a virgem Maria para acolá... acho este papa pior que os outros porque sendo a mesma coisa é muito mais demagogo. Alinha em cenas mediáticas de pagar o café do seu bolso e de viver fora do Vaticano mas depois a postura é a mesma, o discurso ofensivo para as mulheres a defender a supressão das suas liberdades e direitos é o mesmo, o banco do Vaticano com as suas ligações às armas está na mesma, os pedófilos continuam a ser protegidos... ... há muita coisa a fazer para melhorar a justiça no mundo e erradiccar o sexismo é a mais importante porque o sexismo aniquila e mantém na escravatura a quase metade dos seus habitantes.

A primeira-ministra da Tailândia, Yingluck Shinawatra, intentou uma ação por difamação contra um conhecido cartoonista, por a ter comparado a uma "prostituta" num comentário na sua página do Facebook, revelou hoje a imprensa local.

Somchai Katanyutanan, de 72 anos, conhecido como Chai Rathcawat nas colaborações com o jornal Thai Rath, fez o comentário depois do discurso, esta semana, de Yingluck Shinawatra num fórum na Mongólia no qual criticou o golpe militar de 2006 que depôs o seu irmão, Thaksin Shinawatra.

"Por favor, entendam que as prostitutas não são más mulheres. As prostitutas apenas vendem o seu corpo, mas uma mulher má vende toda a nação", escreveu Somchai na sua página no Facebook, que também publicou uma fotografia de Yingluck com o Presidente da Mongólia, segundo o Bangkok Post.
